Overview
A decimal fraction contains a decimal point, such as 1.25 or 0.5. This calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides decimal fractions, then shows the result as both a decimal and a simplified fraction.
Formula
For addition and subtraction, align the decimal places. For multiplication, multiply as whole numbers and add the decimal places. For division, adjust the decimal point and divide.

Worked examples
Example 1: 1.25 + 0.5
1.25 + 0.50 = 1.75, which is 7/4.
Example 2: 0.2 × 0.3
2 × 3 = 6; with two decimal places in total, the result is 0.06.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a decimal to a fraction?
Write the number without the decimal point as the numerator, put 10, 100 or 1,000 in the denominator based on the number of decimal places, then simplify.
Is the result always a terminating decimal?
No. Some divisions produce repeating decimals, such as 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333..., which are shown here as approximations.
Can I enter negative numbers?
Yes, and the operations follow the usual sign rules.
