Overview
This calculator estimates shipment weight before drop-off, especially when the actual weight is unknown. Enter the package dimensions in centimeters and the material density to get volume, estimated weight and volumetric weight.
Formula
Package volume = length × width × height ÷ 1,000,000. Estimated weight = volume in cubic meters × density. Volumetric weight = volume in cubic centimeters ÷ 5,000.
How it works
Enter dimensions
Type the length, width and height in centimeters.
Enter density
Set the material density or use a suitable estimate.
Read the weight
Calculated weights and chargeable weight appear.
Worked examples
Cardboard parcel
A 40×30×20 cm parcel at 200 kg/m³ has a volume of 0.024 m³ and an estimated weight of 4.8 kg.
Dense shipment
If actual weight is 12 kg and calculated weight is 4.8 kg, the chargeable weight is 12 kg.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is density-based weight?
It depends on the density entered. Use the actual material density or a suitable average for the cargo type.
What is volumetric weight?
An estimated weight carriers use to account for bulky shipments. It is often calculated by dividing cubic centimeters by 5,000.
Why does chargeable weight differ from actual weight?
Carriers may charge based on the greater of actual and volumetric weight to price bulky shipments fairly.
