Overview
This tool measures average speed from a clear distance and time, suitable for walking, running or cycling. It is not instantaneous speed and is not ideal for comparing routes with different elevation.
Formula
Speed = distance ÷ time. Distance is converted to meters and time to seconds, then common units are shown.
How it works
Enter distance
Choose the right unit: kilometers, miles or meters.
Enter time
Use hours, minutes and seconds from the same session.
Read speed and pace
Pace is useful for running; speed is useful for general comparison.
Worked examples
5 km in 40 minutes
Speed is 7.5 km/h and pace is 8:00 per km.
100 m in 12 seconds
Speed is 30 km/h, or about 8.33 m/s.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between speed and pace?
Speed is distance per time; pace is time per distance. Pace is more descriptive for running.
Do I need GPS?
No. A known-distance route and a watch are enough. GPS is useful but can have small errors.
Does elevation affect it?
Yes. Uphill or rough routes slow you down without reflecting the true effort.
Does it work for cycling?
Yes for average speed, though pace per kilometer is less commonly used in cycling.
